Enneagram vs Soul Typology – Personality and Soul
In my work as a therapist, it often happens that I see people sitting in front of me with wide eyes when I explain my two favorite methods: the Enneagram and Soul Typology. Because let’s face it: if someone says they can understand your personality and reveal your soul, you might feel a bit like a car at the Vehicle Inspection. “What is he going to discover next? And do I have to repair all this myself, or is there a warranty?” But don’t worry! These methods are not cold research but wonderful tools to get to know yourself and your motives.
The Enneagram and Soul Typology interact in a surprising way. You can think of the Enneagram as your car and soul typology as the engine; they need each other to be able to drive a car.

The Enneagram
The Enneagram helps us understand our personality. This system divides people into nine Types, each with unique ways of coping with life. It teaches us, for example, why some of us want to have everything in order and lose ourselves completely in lists (hint: Enneagram Type 1), while others tend to hide under the table when they see a list (hint: Type 7, the Adventurer). In practice, working with the Enneagram means that you get to know your automatic patterns and habits – those habits that you do see but secretly find easy to just keep repeating. Once you have a better understanding of those patterns, you discover that you can choose: do I continue to do this or not? You are no longer a slave to your inner “behavioral jukebox,” and that gives you a sense of freedom.
Soul Typology
Soul Typology does not give you a technical manual but helps you discover what drives you on a deeper level and gives you meaning. Your soul type doesn’t change like your personality type can as you grow; It is a constant, a deeper purpose that flows through everything. Where the Enneagram helps you to recognize your personal habits, soul typology teaches you to embrace the source of your desires and choices.

Where the Enneagram helps you to recognize your personal habits, soul typology teaches you to embrace the source of your desires and choices.
Let’s zoom in on those different soul types because, yes, there are quite a few. We have the Creator Soul, who wants to shape everything that is loose and stuck, preferably with a good dose of glitter and confetti. Then there is the Priest-Healer, who often feels called to help others, a bit like that friend who is ready with a cup of tea and words of wisdom even during a difficult situation. Each soul type brings its own motivations and challenges, but more importantly, each soul type is like a compass that points you in the direction of fulfillment. It shows you that there are deeper forces at work shaping your choices and desires.

But how do these two methods work together without getting in each other’s way?
Imagine: the Enneagram first helps you to see through your patterns. You may discover that as a type 3 Achiever/Winner, you are quite good at always wanting to prove that you really are the best. What you may also learn is that you can sometimes pull out that urge to perform a little less often – because, believe it or not, your value is not only in your CV. Once you have figured out how to better understand your patterns, there is room to discover what is actually underneath that urge to perform. And that’s where soul typology comes in. Imagine that as a Performer, you suddenly discover that you are actually a Priest-Healer. Suddenly, your mission changes: it’s no longer about your performance but about supporting others. Your ambitions are still nurtured, but by a calling that feels much deeper and more fulfilling.
The beauty of this collaboration is that the Enneagram and soul typology do not stand in each other’s way but rather reinforce each other. The Enneagram teaches us to be aware of our personality and habits. And yes, that sometimes means taking a good look at those patterns that may have become a bit too persistent. It may turn out that as a Type 6 – the Loyalist – you have developed an exaggerated need for security. By being more aware of this, you learn to use that loyalty and caring in a constructive way. Next, Soul Typology helps you to discover that as a Cosmic Soul, which brings with it a beautiful deep energy of peace and protection, you can use this safety in a deeper way, not only for yourself but also for others.
This interplay between the Enneagram and soul typology gives a particularly rich and comprehensive picture of who you are. Through the Enneagram, you learn why you act in a certain way, while Soul Typology puts you in touch with an underlying meaning that gives you direction. This combined approach will not only help you gain insight into your personal patterns but also help you discover what you have to do here and what contribution really fulfills you.
So, where the Enneagram focuses on ‘who am I with my behavior?’, Soul Typology looks at ‘what am I here for?’ and ‘what drives me at a soul level?’. Both methods work beautifully together, a bit like yin and yang – or, if you prefer, like peanut butter and sprinkles.
One without the other provides insight, but together, they offer a complete picture of who you are and who you want to be. This combined path gives you the tools to not only live more consciously but also to feel that you are really at home in the bigger picture.
